Ty Lowe wins “ACTION PACKED” Toccoa Event Shriners 40”

It was the FASTRAK Dirt Late Model Series last event in Georgia for the 2010 season and did they ever leave a lasting impression on the fans. From 3 wide racing to fist shaking, to blown engines, it all happened at Saturday nights event.

Ty Lowe driver of the #56 blue Barry Wright car sponsored by Gabriels Towing, won the pole qualifying even faster than all of the super late models and eventually ended up with the win after a very exciting night of racing. “I am blessed” said Lowe in victory lane. “This team is blessed and continues to be so. Tonight was proof of that. I hated to see Davenport lose a engine like that, but we will take them any way we can get them”.

The field of competitors were incredibly strong in this event with series’ champions, super late model champions, FASTRAK late model champions and two drivers tied for the 2010 Old Mans Garage SE Tour points chase between David Smith and Royce Bray. Man this was about to get good and in a hurry! You could cut the anticipation even in the grandstands with a knife.

Chip Brindle 2008 Nesmith Series Champion was in the house, as was the 2009 Champion Eric Cooley. Rambo Franklin current Carolina Clash late model points leader, Jonathan Davenport current Southern Nationals champion. Then comes track champions from across the SE including Parker Herring, Danny Sanders among others. Add to that it was probably the last event for a longtime for current soldier heading to Afghanistan driving the #27j, Jay Dunham and it had to be one of the best nights of racing for the FASTRAK late model series and the Toccoa Speedway.

Lowe took the point with the fastest time in qualifying. Rambo 2nd, Parker Herring 3rd and Davenport 4th. The first 8 laps were perfect with everyone using their heads and making it through the tight, high banked corners. Then as they say, “cautions breed cautions”. There were cautions but none without excitement. It wasn’t boring to say the least.

It was Lowe, Rambo, Parker then Davenport close enough to throw a blanket over all four of them, each just waiting for the other to make a mistake. Unfortunately under a caution flag, one of Parkers crew members went to his car on the race track and that is a big no-no with FASTRAK and has been a rule from the beginning. He was parked for the night. That made it Lowe, Rambo then Davenport. Davenport got under Rambo coming off turn four and finished the pass down the front straight. Now its Lowe, Davenport, Rambo and Smith. Lowe ran up on lap traffic and on one occasion Davenport got under him going into turn 1, but Lowe passed him back coming off turn 2 as Davenport pushed up the track. Caution. Lowe took off again with Davenport in close pursuit. Then once again lap traffic a few laps later. This time Lowe went low and Davenport made his way by on the outside, wouldn’t stick. Two laps later he tried the move again around the top of 3 and 4 and came out behind the lap car only inches ahead of Lowe. In the meantime the cars of Rambo and Smith were now right on their back bumpers. Lowe gained some momentum on the bottom down the straight and Davenport cut to the inside of the lap car going into turns 1 and 2. All three cars bumped into the sides of each other and they all did a great job of not taking them any of thre three out of the race. Davenport came out ahead and Lowe following, having to make his way around the lap car. Davenport seemed to be pulling ahead just a bit, but coming off turn 4 with only five laps to go, the engine expired leaving him in smoke and water inside of the front straight. Lowe led the last five laps of the event with Rambo and Smith battling for second place. Lowe won his first ever FASTRAK touring series event!

It was a great night of racing action and some of the best racing I have personally ever seen. The Shriners were there collecting funds for the childrens hospital. The 27j was running what was probably his last racing event before going to serve this great country and the crowd I would estimate was the largest of the Toccoa Speedway the entire season. All in all a great night of racing and something to leave the fans thinking about until the 2011 season rolls around.
